Tympanometry Test

Category Audiology Services

Tympanometry is a diagnostic test that assesses the function of the middle ear and the mobility of the eardrum (tympanic membrane). This test is particularly useful in evaluating conditions such as otitis media (middle ear infections), eustachian tube dysfunction, and other middle ear disorders. Tympanometry provides information about the pressure in the middle ear, the compliance of the eardrum, and the movement of the tiny bones in the middle ear.

Here is an overview of how a tympanometry test is typically conducted:

  1. Preparation:

    • The individual undergoing the test is usually seated comfortably.
    • It's important that the ear canal is free from obstructions, such as earwax, for accurate results.
  2. Equipment:

    • Tympanometer: This is the primary device used in the test. It consists of a hand-held probe connected to the tympanometer machine.
    • Ear Tip or Probe: The probe is inserted into the ear canal, creating an airtight seal.
  3. Procedure:

    • The ear tip is gently placed in the ear canal, creating a seal.
    • The tympanometer varies air pressure in the ear canal, and the machine measures the eardrum's response to these pressure changes.
  4. Measurement:

    • Tympanometry measures the compliance of the eardrum by recording how it responds to changes in air pressure.
    • The results are often represented graphically on a tympanogram.
  5. Tympanogram Types:

    • Type A: Normal middle ear function.
    • Type B: Indicates middle ear effusion (fluid in the middle ear), eardrum perforation, or a problem with the ear canal.
    • Type C: Indicates negative middle ear pressure, possibly due to eustachian tube dysfunction.
  6. Interpretation:

    • The audiologist or healthcare professional interprets the tympanogram to assess middle ear function and identify any abnormalities.
    • Tympanometry results, along with other tests like audiometry, help in diagnosing the cause of hearing problems.

Tympanometry is a valuable tool in audiology and otolaryngology for assessing middle ear function. It is often used in conjunction with other tests, such as audiometry, to provide a comprehensive evaluation of an individual's hearing health. If you are experiencing hearing issues or have concerns about your ear health, it's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or audiologist who can perform the necessary tests and provide appropriate guidance.
