BTE stands for Behind-the-Ear, and BTE hearing aids are a type of hearing aid that is worn behind or on top of the outer ear. BTE hearing aids are among the most common and versatile types of hearing aids, suitable for a wide range of hearing losses, from mild to profound. They consist of two main parts: a small plastic case that houses the electronic components and a custom ear mold or a dome that directs sound into the ear.

1. Components:

   • Case or Shell: The case, which contains the hearing aid's electronics, is worn behind the ear. It is typically made of lightweight and durable plastic.
   • Tube or Ear Hook: Connects the case to the ear mold or dome.
   • Ear Mold or Dome: The ear mold is custom-made to fit the individual's ear canal, while the dome is a generic, softer tip that fits into the ear canal.

2. Variations:

   • Standard BTE: The components are housed in a single case behind the ear, connected to the ear mold by a tube.
   • Mini BTE (or Receiver-in-Canal - RIC): The receiver (speaker) is placed in the ear canal, and the electronics are in a case behind the ear, connected by a thin wire. This design allows for a more discreet appearance.
   • Open Fit BTE: Similar to the standard BTE but with a smaller tube and a dome instead of a custom ear mold. It allows for a more natural sound and reduces the occlusion effect (feeling of fullness in the ear).

The choice of a hearing aid style, including BTE, depends on factors such as the degree of hearing loss, lifestyle, personal preferences, and the recommendation of an audiologist or hearing healthcare professional.
